Feb. 9 online Faculty Lecture Forum to explore gender bias in the media

E.J. Graff, an award-winning journalist and the associate director of the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis, will lead the next Faculty Lecture Forum, "Who's Counting? Women and the Media," at 7:30 p.m. on February 9.

We expect news outlets in the United States to deliver an accurate snapshot of the world, with all its important problems, issues, and players. News reporting is supposed to be objective, factual, and free of bias. Yet, according to several recent studies, women are under-represented in the news, whether as subjects, sources, commentators, or news directors. Graff's discussion will touch on whether we are receiving accurate news and how gender bias in the news media affects gender equality in our culture.

The Faculty Lecture Forum brings the richness of the Brandeis classroom experience to members of the University's off-campus community. Through a simulcast, distinguished Brandeis faculty members discuss relevant topics of the day. Following the lecture, viewers can participate in an interactive question-and-answer session.

Graff's work has appeared in such publications as the New York Times Magazine, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy Magazine, The Boston Globe, Columbia Journalism Review, The Los Angeles Times, The Nation, The New Republic, Slate.com, and in dozens of anthologies.

In addition to serving as the associate director and senior researcher at the Schuster Institute, where she directs the Gender & Justice Project, she is a resident scholar at the Women's Studies Research Center at Brandeis.
