The Brandeis Institute for International Judges (BIIJ) provides members of the international judiciary with the opportunity to meet and discuss critical issues concerning the theory and practice of international justice. Institutes are held approximately every 18 months, bringing together judges serving on international courts and tribunals around the world to reflect on the practical challenges as well as philosophical aspects of their work.
The seventh BIIJ will be held from July 25 to 30, 2010 in Salzburg, Austria, around the theme, “Toward an International Rule of Law.” BIIJ 2010 will host 16 judges from 13 different international courts and tribunals. These will include long-time participating institutions – such as the International Court of Justice, International Criminal Court, and the European Court of Human Rights – as well as two institutions participating for the first time: the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
Brandeis is pleased that participants will be joined by Anthony Kennedy, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court; and Patricia O’Brien, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs, who will serve as the institute’s keynote speaker.
BIIJ co-directors:
- Justice Richard J. Goldstone, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda
- Professor Linda Carter, Pacific McGeorge School of Law
BIIJ program committee:
- Fausto Pocar, judge and past president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
- Jennifer Hillman, member of the WTO Appellate Body
- Fatsah Ouguergouz, judge of the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights
Funding for BIIJ 2010 is provided by the David Berg Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Rice Family Foundation.
